You know, I understand the temptation for studios to greenlight direct-to-DVD sequels for semi-popular movies, but I really don’t see why they would bother trying the same thing for a movie that failed the first time around. Can a DTV sequel with a lesser known cast and crew really offer an improvement? Granted, I still haven’t seen Alexandre Aja’s Mirrors , but the 15% …  Read More →

I’m heading out for a few days off. After being made redundant and with my wife’s birthday today, Filmstalker is taking a back seat for some real life issues, but just for two to three days, there may be the odd story here and there but I’ll be back by the weekend and getting caught up. Next week some big things will be starting, a lot of behind the scenes work, a huge drive to  Read More →

Winner of the Visions Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles’ “Cidade de Deus” a.k.a “City of God” (2002) arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Canadian distributors Alliance. Last week we asked you guys what Angelina Jolie’s best film is, and the results were a lot closer than I anticipated. James Mangold’s Girl, Interrupted ended up coming out on top (who says Oscars are meaningless?) while the next few places in the poll were almost neck in neck. Mr. and Mrs. Smith placed second, followed by Changeling , Hackers and Wanted . I was a bit surprised to see Hackers so high on the list, but I guess I’m...

Highly Recommended THE FILM The painless comparison to make for the French release, “A Prophet,” is to position the picture in the shadow of “The Godfather.” In terms of epic crime film storytelling and patient character transformation, it’s a solid DNA match, yet “A Prophet” is a far more feral, scattered production, forgoing any sort of reassuring sweep to snap around like a cobra, striking randomly...

Or, an Idiot’s Guide to Lovemaking With a tagline that oh-so-cleverly reads, “Don’t beat around the bush,” two things are immediately apparent about the straight-to-video flop How to Make Love to a Woman : 1.) It’s going to be one of those crass sex comedies where men are portrayed as total ignoramuses when it comes to the topography and workings of women’s nether-regions, and 2.) it’ll inevitably try to make a tender, heartfelt point about...

Yet another movie that was being promoted at the San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend is a new project from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay — no, not The Other Guys , but rather another indie comedy that they are producing through Gary Sanchez Productions called The Virginity Hit . The film actually screened at SDCC where it seemed to get a very positive reaction, and now …  Read More →

Well it won’t be for long because it seems to be getting the cease and desist treatment, however the trailer for Paul that was shown at Comic-Con has been put online. No need to worry though, it’s a terrible copy and you can hardly see a thing, even some of the dialogue is difficult to make out. However you do see Paul, as well as get some of the jokes being fired about. You know, why don’t they release the trailer online for all...

I’m going to be honest and say that I had no idea about Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy, and when that appeared with the words “Exclusive trailer” it was just vague interest that stole me across. However after watching it I’m now rather intrigued. The film stars Juliette Binoche and William Shimell who are two strangers that pretend to be a married couple and the trailer is everything that a Hollywood trailer isn’t….Visit...

Gareth Edwards’ Monsters has built up steam from the festival circuit earlier this year, being picked up by Magnet Releasing after debuting at South by Southwest.  The first-time director’s mirco-budget film has many comparing it aesthetically to District 9, mostly due to its hand-held camerawork.  Monsters is a sci-fi / horror film in which a probe, sent to discover the presence …  Read More →
