Highly Recommended THE FILM The painless comparison to make for the French release, “A Prophet,” is to position the picture in the shadow of “The Godfather.” In terms of epic crime film storytelling and patient character transformation, it’s a solid DNA match, yet “A Prophet” is a far more feral, scattered production, forgoing any sort of reassuring sweep to snap around like a cobra, striking randomly at anyone who steps near it. For better or worse, the picture pulses with menace, creating a striking portrait of the years spent deep inside a turbulent prison society. At 19 years of age, Malik (Tahar Rahim) is about to begin …

The Last Station (Blu-ray)
Rent It THE FILM If there’s anything tremendously positive to write about “The Last Station,” it would be how the picture casts an interesting light on celebrated author Leo Tolstoy and the wrath of his final years, in which he morphed into a deity to some of his more ardent Russian followers. It’s a convincing portrait...

Open Forum Friday: Will the Tom Cruise Factor Kill Knight & Day… and M:I4?
It’s been over five years since Tom Cruise bounced around on Oprah’s couch like a little schoolgirl, and still the general public has not forgiven him for this goofy outburst. I’m not entirely sure why his image was so irrevocably marred by this incident, especially when certain public figures have done much worse things and...

DEEP BLUE SEA (1999, Blu-ray released August 3, 2010 (CAN), August 31, 2010 (USA – Best Buy Exclusive) – MSRP $26.99 CAN) Deep Blue Sea is a ridiculous movie featuring angry sharks with artificially enlarged brains, biting and smashing their way into a deep-sea research facility, chomping through every B-list and C-list star who gets...
Dukes (Blu-ray Review)
A heist film for the over-50 set… An independent, low-budget caper comedy for wistful baby boomers, The Dukes is a passion project of long-time character actor Robert Davi, whose pitted mug and deep set eyes you might recognize from License to Kill , Die Hard , The Goonies , and Showgirls . Davi has made a career out of playing cops, crooks,...

A star-studded cast elevates an otherwise mediocre affair. Mickey RourkeÂ’s Hollywood film career is littered with nearly as much gossip and rumor as his personal life. Humanoids from the Deep (Blu-ray)
Highly Recommended What a difference a couple hundred extra lines of resolution makes! Having missed it in theaters when it was new, I first caught Humanoids from the Deep (1980) via (Roger Corman’s) New Concorde’s extremely mediocre DVD version, released during the early days of the format, in June 1999. That version was open-matte...
